The EPUB format for e-books – The Endless Bookcase Services

The EPUB format for e-books

EPUB is a free and open e-book standard by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). The letters EPUB merely stand for electronic publication and the files have the extension “.epub”. Incidentally, you’ll also see it referred to as ePub, ePUB, EPub, or epub.

EPUB is effectively the main standard for e-book formats, which is why it has become very widely adopted. With some notable proprietary exceptions (such as Amazon’s Kindle), most e-book reader devices are able to display files saved in the EPUB format.

At The Endless Bookcase we publish all of our books in multiple formats, including EPUB.

However, you don’t have to have an e-book reader device to read books or other documents published in the EPUB format. Other choices are:

  • Reader software installed on your laptop or PC.
  • Apps installed on your phone.
  • Plug-ins installed on your internet browser.

You are spoilt for choice on all of these but to get you started here are some suggestions:

Adobe Digital Editions is an EPUB reader that runs on Macs and PCs.

The Bluefire Reader app is free and works on Apple and Android phones.

EPUBReader is an add-on that works with the Mozilla Firefox browser.

MagicScroll works with several other browsers.

For a large library of free EPUB-formatted books see Project Gutenberg.
